I admit, I had been avoiding watching The Cove for a long time. I thought I just wouldn’t handle seeing the killings of dolphins. And I couldn’t. It makes me so sad, so mad and so powerless. How can anyone do that?
But then I realised that by not watching it I am ignoring the issue. I’m being ignorant. I’m turning a blind eye. There is no change if we ignore what is really going on.
Many years ago I swam with the dusky dolphins in Kaikoura, New Zealand and it was a very meaningful experience. I felt so connected to them and so happy in their presence. It was quite amazing being out in the ocean swimming with them in their world and they seemed truly happy to have us with them. I cannot fathom hurting any of them, ever.
This movie will open your eyes to more than you think. This is an issue of education. An issue of health. An issue of power and ignorance but also tradition and culture.
The people involved in getting this movie created were selfless and courageous. So while I am sad, angry and emotional – I also feel that WE THE PEOPLE can make a difference.
All I can say is that something must be done. Who wants to join me?
