Magical Morocco

In March 2020, I was on my way to a dream adventure with my parents. We had a tailor-made tour organised through an Australian Travel Company, Souk & Co, who create authentic, immersive journeys through Morocco. We planned to visit many wonderful locations such as Chefchaouen (the blue pearl of Morocco), the restored Ksar of Khorbate, the Sahara Desert and Marrakech, all with a local guide.

As a lover of meeting locals who are making a meaningful difference, I asked Sally, our trip organiser-extraordinaire, to include some visits to social enterprises. One of those visits was to an argan oil cooperative run by women. I wanted to witness their work & hear their stories about the benefits of argan oil right from the source! I heard so many great things about this liquid gold and what better way to understand the product more than visiting the country where it is harvested! Of course, this trip was not to be due to the global pandemic. But I will go one day and I just know it’s going to be magical!

Recently, I was reading an article about meaningful businesses and discovered Youforher. Founders, Jacqui and Hind, left their corporate jobs in Sydney to start this meaningful business with a product they truly believe in, argan oil. Hind (Moroccan, French and Australian) and Jacqui (Australian) wanted to not only share the benefits but they also wanted to make a difference to the people of Morocco. My kind of business!

They discovered a large gender equality gap with approximately 40% of Moroccan women being illiterate, near double that of men. Girls in rural communities are particularly disadvantaged by the arduous long distances to access schools. They wanted to bridge this gap and support these women. Youforher work with an ethical, all-female co-operative of traditional Berber women in the heart of the Arganier Biosphere Reserve in Morocco. The co-operative is made up of more than 70 women, who are committed to improving their living conditions as well as that of their families.

Argan oil is extracted from the nut of fruits from the argan tree. It’s called “liquid gold” because of the amber colour and the many valuable ways it can benefit your hair, skin, and face. It is a pure multi-use oil for everyone in the family: from newborns to teens, adults and the grandparents, both men and women.

So instead of visiting Morocco to learn from these amazing women I now have an Australian business who is educating me. Whilst I cannot travel, I can still learn and experience authentic argan oil right here in Australia thanks to Youforher!

Did you know?

Before argan oil became a popular oil for skin and hair, it was actually originally used for cooking by the people of Morocco (because it is only in Morocco that this oil is produced)!  Argan oil has tons of micronutrients, making it super healthy. Packed with vitamin E, antioxidants, and fatty acids it improves heart health, lowers cholesterol, reduces digestion issues, supports anti-aging and so much more.

I’ve been using their argan oil for a week now and I’m so impressed. As I age, I have more dry skin, wrinkles and even some sagging around the jawline and neck. After a week using on my face every night, I’ve noticed a real difference – it’s looking clearer, tighter and more hydrated. I love the feel of it too. It’s not greasy and has only a subtle smell. I’ve used it on an old wound on my knee and it’s already reduced the redness.
