Uniting people to protect the planet.

31 March at 8.30pm

While in Egypt in 2010 I was so excited to be there to witness their version of Earth Hour.  And what a great effort it was!  While looking out over the Nile in Cairo I was thrilled that most of the hotels and buildings along the city’s river banks turned off their lights!  What’s so amazing is this is a city of over 7 million people and they realised the importance of this event and switched off to save.  Obviously I have no photos to share as it was too dark. But I’m glad I had the opportunity to experience such peace in the middle of a usually chaotic metropolis.

So in 2011 I was so excited to have a party at home and celebrate what Melbourne had to offer.  With candles ready we awaited the clock to turn 8.30pm and lights out.  Well I have to say I was very disappointed.  My view of the city was awash with lights.  So I’m calling out to all to all of Melbourne (and Australia) to make the effort this year and switch off.

Earth Hour is now an annual event held in more than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide. This is a powerful message for action on climate change.  Earth Hour is organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s largest independent conservation organisations. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth’s natural environment and build a future where people live in harmony with nature.

So lets all do our best to switch off and save!

Surrender

Surrender

One of my big lessons over the past few years was to let go of the idea of control. We can only control certain aspects of our lives and how we react to situations. In my learning and development world, we call this the Circle of Concern and Influence. Stephen Covey...
