Time-Out

I’m taking some time-out.  Sometimes we have to do this.  Rarely do we do it.  I am.

Yesterday the power supplier of my apartment had to shut down the power for 30 minutes.  I work from home so during this time I couldn’t do any of my work online, I couldn’t use the microwave to heat up my lunch, I couldn’t play my stereo or use the kettle to make a cup of tea. Whilst I did have my very clever smart phone, I decided that this was a great time to experiment with life before such easy access to technology and try a time-out without stimulation from technology.

What is it about us that makes us want to always have some sort of stimulation.  What are we afraid of with sitting in silence?

I made my decision.  I would sit in silence and just eat.

I created a delicious salad of fresh vegetables, lemon juice and tuna.  I sat in my lounge room and looked out over my balcony and the city beyond.  Every mouthful of food was tasted and savoured.  I didn’t think about anything in particular.  I could hear sounds from the world outside – trucks pressing their heavy breaks, cars and their horns honking, helicopters flying over downtown, builders banging their hammers and the distant chatter of people going about their day.   I looked at the world in my silence for 30 minutes and felt…relaxed.  Peaceful.  I felt more relaxed than I have all week even including during my daily workouts.  I realised that this is as close to meditation as I get these days in my busy life.

We are so switched-on ALL THE TIME.  Rarely do we use of the OFF button until possibly when we fall to sleep – and for most of us, that’s just as busy as the rest of our lives.  This is something to think about in our modern world.

Time out is a simple as switching off the phone, turning off the computer, and sit, be still and give yourself a re-boot.  Re-connect with the world we live in. Re-connect with ourselves.  Have some peace.

So I’ve decided to also take some time-out from Miss Meaningful.  I’m going to give myself a mini-break and allow the creative juices to flow.  I’ll be back before you know it!

Until next time.  Why not give yourself a little time-out and see how you feel. 🙂

Surrender

Surrender

One of my big lessons over the past few years was to let go of the idea of control. We can only control certain aspects of our lives and how we react to situations. In my learning and development world, we call this the Circle of Concern and Influence. Stephen Covey...
